Sensory Room

Our Sensory Room is a dedicated area in our care home, that has been thoughtfully designed to stimulate the senses of our residents, with a special focus on those living with conditions such as Dementia, Cerebral Palsy, Sensory Impairment, Visual Impairment or Hearing Impairment. The Sensory Room has been carefully created to incorporate elements like multicoloured lighting, unique sounds and tactile objects. A sensory room is designed to aid in the development of communication skills, enhance focus, and offer a calming effect and continue our ethos of fully personalised care.

The Benefits of a Sensory Room

Elderly individuals can often experience a decline in their sensory abilities, including conditions like presbyopia, age-related hearing loss, and diminished tactile sensation, which can limit sensory stimulation. The gradual loss of mobility further affects sensory pathways, which we consider vital for overall well-being. The various components provided in a Sensory Room enable a care home to engage with residents affected by certain conditions and provide sensory enhancement through 1-1 therapy sessions. These sessions are free from cognitive demands, creating a space where residents can unwind, feel joyful and be entertained in a calm environment.

Inclusive Sensory Activities

We are committed to accommodating a diverse array of interests, ensuring that residents of all ages and abilities can participate in our daily activities offered within our activities programme. Whether residents have limited mobility, are living with dementia, or need support with daily tasks, our activities programme offers many sensory activities that can be performed in the sensory room or other rooms in the home. From animal therapy to painting, playing with kinetic sand, listening to music, creating scent boxes and building blocks, we strive to keep residents with dementia and sensory impairment involved and engaged.

Sensory Room FAQs

We understand the importance of understanding what a care home can offer someone with sensory impairments. Below you will find the top three most frequently asked questions regarding sensory rooms. If your question remains unanswered, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the friendly team.

A Sensory Room is a specially designed room that combines a number of sensory elements to aid older people with learning difficulties, developmental disabilities, sensory impairments, or dementia in stimulating and engaging their senses. It serves as a versatile environment suitable for therapy, physical activity, and relaxation.

No two sensory rooms are the same, each is specifically designed to meet a number of needs within a care home. The purpose of a sensory room is to offer a safe, mood-enhancing environment, improving the quality of life for care home residents with certain health conditions. In a sensory room, you will often see different seating options, coloured lighting, a projector, soft furnishings and tactile objects.

Just a few of the activities that can be provided to support residents with dementia include finger painting, listening to music, coin sorting, hand massages, folding towels and much more. These activities aim to enhance the mental and emotional well-being of residents living with dementia.
