Engaging Indoor Group Activities
January is always a cold, dull month and everything slows down a bit from the busy Christmas period, so we decided to put on some indoor group activities for our residents, their loved ones and our staff to enjoy.
Over the last couple of weeks, our residents have really enjoyed the range of different activities we've provided. Each unit has taken part in game afternoons such as draughts, jenga, table ping pong and boules to name a few. Our wonderful ladies loved flower arranging the most, they said they found it very relaxing and therapeutic. Everyone actually benefitted from this activity as the flowers were placed throughout Beechgrove Care Home for everyone to enjoy.
Scrapbooking was another activity we thought we would introduce to our residents, we used old Christmas Cards to make books to keep and enjoy and then add things to them as time goes on. An art group has also started within our care home, some residents did sketches whilst others did some mosaic abstract designs with paper and foam.
We're always encouraging our residents to get involved and do the things they love to do the most. Therefore, a book club has formed, in which is being held twice a month and is continuing to grow. Any family that would like their relative to attend should speak with Kirsty, one of our activity ladies.
Our normal chair exercises continue and is well supported; everyone enjoys this time. We have also signed up for 'Burn Boys Gym' which is held every Friday at 11am via Zoom. This is a live fitness class with other care homes in Edinburgh, the idea is to provide all the residents with specific exercises for anyone over the ages of 65 to get involved and improve their flexibility with gentle aerobics from the comfort of their armchairs. It's a great activity to be apart of, the atmosphere is great and gives everyone that much needed boost.
Our residents enjoyed doing these fun group activities with each other; they loved having their friends and family there joining in on the variety of fun activities. The benefits of this day was to ensure our residents spent more time with one another, the staff members and their loved ones in the comfort of their own home.
